Many chemicals are added as water is treated to optimise pH levels for maximum flocculation rates. A very common flocculant is Ferric Chloride (FeCl3), but more complex polymers are also used to combine with solid particles in primary waste water treatment station feeds to form sludge as part of the clarification process. At the end of the treatment process chemicals like Copperas or Ferrous Sulphate (FeSO4), are used for reduction of residual phosphates.
